(3)Summary.

This article analyzes the factors that contribute to major choice for college students, and utilizes data to determine what causes the choice in major for both entry and graduation.

(4)Author(s).

Paul D. Umbach - Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, University of Iowa
Stephen R. Porter - Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Iowa State University

(5)Key terms.

Math preparation - student's high school math level as an important determinant of major choice
Model environments - translated into a typology for academic disciplines under categories such as realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional

(6)Three Quotes.  Page reference is in the PDF page number, rather than the book number.

" Females are significantly more likely than males to choose interdisciplinary and social science majors over science majors." (13)
"However, academic preparation, family influence and academic self-efficacy do not
seem to matter after taking into account personality." (16)
"Our findings add to a growing body of evidence that students in particular majors have very similar political views and personalities." (17)

(7)Value.

This research helps me answer the same questions that they asked initially. Questions like, what are the factors that predict student major choice? This evidence can give me a strong counter argument that the price level of college education has no correlation with major choice. Also how things such as race, political views, and educational background are the largest determinants of major choice.
